The Port Perry Farmer’s Market is here!

June 29, 2009 by MikeD

The Port Perry Farmer’s Market officially kicked-off this weekend, and based on the feedback from everybody involved, it was a great opening day. Located in the Palmer Park parking lot (Mary & Water streets), local vendors featured fresh meat, vegetables, flowers and herbs, baked goods and preserves.

The market will run every Saturday morning, from 8:00 am till noon, and farmers will provide farm-fresh products until Thanksgiving weekend. And as part of their agreement, 70 per cent of what they sell must be grown on their own farms with the remaining items being grown in Ontario.

There is no better way to buy fresh produce and meats, so get out there and support out local farmer’s and growers. Buy local. Eat local.

I will be expanding on the whole “eating local” topic in future posts, as more people are becoming aware of how our food is produced and processed, and how it affects our health. If this is a topic you feel strongly about, please leave us a comment, and share it with the community.

See you at the Farmer’s Market!

    Hi Mike,

We think your site is Fantastic. You met Bob at the market and he came home tickled that he was asked to talk to the camera. Promoting our business is second, only in so much as planting is what started the show on the road.
We thank you for taking the time to get us out there on the giant ” you tube ” ride.
Imagine Bob Strickland in cyber space, never thought we’d see that.
Seeing a farmer sell his ware, for me that’s what it’s all about.

    Thank You
Bob & Jacquie Strickland of Strickland’s Perennial Farm

Opening the store this morning, across from the park, I saw the parking lot was FILLED. My heart utterly soared!

As the storm clouds loomed overhead, still there was a crowd over at the new Port Perry Farmers Market.

What a FANTASTIC addition to the spirit that is the downtown community here in Port Perry.

I hope this is a permnament fixture for many years to come.

    Hi,

I’ve been attending this market for a few months now and had a chance to talk to many of the vendors. I have a concern. It seems that the market manager is ALSO a vendor and is ALSO the occupant of the best selling space available on the site. Is this not a conflict of interest? I’ve been involved in other farmers’ markets, and it always works best when the market manager is non-partisan, that is to say, has nothing to gain from individual sales at the market. In the end, it means fair treatment to ALL vendors, and a better market all around.

My other concern, as a customer, is that the market should perhaps start a little later, and should for sure end later. I show up around 11:00 myself, and notice that people really only start getting going in Port Perry around this time. Would be nice to have some early afternoon hours to spend with these great vendor.

    That’s about it :)
